Watercolor is Your Unhinged BFF

Watercolor is unhinged, temperamental, and uncooperative. It changes its drying times based on humidity, temperature - and well - general moodiness! Unlike oil painting, with watercolor you have to work quickly in order to create interesting effects and atmospheres before the paint dries because once it dries...you are done for and there is no turning back.

But these are the reasons I love to paint watercolor. I feel like I am working with something that is alive and can create things I couldn't dare to imagine in my minds eye. At the end of the day, watercolor has helped me have patience, surrender, trust, and a sense of humor about my own imperfection.

Whenever I am painting, the actual applying of paint to the paper accounts for only about 10% of the time. Because watercolor is living art, you have to prepare for it like a performance. So I am often rehearsing each painting in my mind before I ever so much as touch a brush.
